BONUS: It’s ACTUALLY more convenient! Once you learn to make your own bread at home you don’t have to worry about running out. This was a LEGITIMATE concern of mine as a mom to 4 kids age 7 and under!

Let’s dive in to the above 10 reasons to make homemade bread!

It Tastes WAY Better

There really isn’t much discussion to be had here. We all know what a huge difference there is between even the most basic homemade white bread recipe and the loaf of Wonder Bread you can grab in store!

Of course you can always go to your local bakery for that homemade, fresh from the oven taste. However, you will most definitely be paying a pretty penny for someone else to make that delicacy for you.

It’s CONSIDERABLY Cheaper

So why not just make it yourself?

Seriously, how much does a big bag of flour cost?

Here in Alberta, Canada I can pick up a 10kg bag of all purpose flour (totally fine for making bread) for $8.00 on sale.

Of course you will need water, salt, sugar, some form of fat (usually vegetable oil), and if you really want to be fancy, some milk (plant milks only on this blog!)

There are different varieties of bread where you could add all sorts of ingredients. Regardless, if you were to pick up that same Cinnamon Raisin Loaf from a specialty bakery, you would be paying quadruple the price.

Just make it at home.

Homemade Bread is FULLY Customizable

Whether you feel like a cheesy onion bread, or a sweet orange cranberry loaf, you can have it!

This is perfect for people with dietary restrictions-or even more serious, allergies.

Most of the loaves you will find on my blog are all allergy friendly because they are vegan. No dairy, butter or eggs here!

There are no Preservatives in Homemade Bread

This is a huge bonus for me.

Our diet isn’t perfect, and I’m definitely not a purest when it comes to healthy eating.

I do try and avoid added chemicals and preservatives where I can.

Especially when making my own bread is so easy, I just don’t see a point to eating bread that’s made to last for 2 weeks or longer!

My homemade bread usually stays fresh for about 4 days or so before it begins to dry out and taste a little stale.

Around my house this NEVER happens because, as I mentioned, I have a whole house full of bread fiends!

Reduce Your Waste by Eating Homemade Bread

It seems to be at the forefront of everyone’s minds lately.

We all are trying to be more considerate about waste production-and reduction!

Why not do your part in a delicious way by making your own bread?

You will be able to completely cut out the packaging associated with store bought bread.

I still use plastic to store my homemade bread, but I reuse my large Ziploc bag MANY times before it needs to be replaced.

You could take it a step further even by using a glass container with a lid to store yours!

And speaking of waste….how many times have you purchased too much bread and it’s gone bad before you remembered to throw it in the freezer?

I know it’s happened to me before.

Making your own bread at home allows for an “on demand” process.

Plus-we did mention how good it tastes, so I doubt you’ll be forgetting to eat the homemade stuff!

It’s Pretty Fast to Make

Most of my homemade bread recipes are placed on the “basic” cycle of my bread maker. This cycle lasts for around 3 hours.

That can sound like a long time, but really, you just set it and forget it!

I don’t need to wait around for my bread maker to finish baking my bread.

Most of the time I put my ingredients in before bed. Then when the family wakes up we have a fresh loaf (2 actually, once we slice it!) waiting for us.

OOOH! And here’s another BONUS for you-waking up to the smell of freshly baked bread!

Hobby Material

I LOVE making my own bread!

I mean, I did start an entire blog about it!!

Making your own bread is an amazing form of creative expression! There are endless combinations of texture and flavor to experiment with!

Once you really get in to the science behind the bread making process it gets even more exciting (super nerd talking here!!)

Knead some Stress Relief?

For real-if you get in to making your own bread by hand it becomes a serious form of stress reduction!

You have to knead a typical bread ball for around 10 minutes.

That’s 10 minutes of repetition where you can zone out and meditate a little.

It’s like one of those stress balls-except you get to eat it after!

Make Some Gifts

People love the heartfelt sentiment of a homemade gift.

People also love being able to share food together.

Why not put the two together and bring a fresh loaf of homemade bread to your next gathering.

Make it special by braiding the dough and forming a ring. Then you can bake it and place a nice candle or bowl of butter inside the ring.

Just beautiful!

Feel Close to Those Who Came Before You

It’s such a human act-making bread. Almost every culture around the globe has some form of bread.

Delve a little deeper into your history by making loaves traditional to your families culture and heritage.

Is Home Made Bread Good For You?

With all of the above mentioned benefits to making your bread at home, I do believe that making your own bread is healthier than buying it from a store.

Should we eat a loaf of bread every day to ourselves and call it health food-probably not!

But I think it’s safe to say that there is a lot more to consider when making bread yourself than just calories and nutrition.
