Homestyle 100% Whole Wheat Vegan Bread

This whole wheat vegan bread machine recipe is perfect! A soft crumb with a very light texture. Full of flavor and nutrition.

Quite a few whole wheat bread recipes tend to contain milk, butter and honey. This recipe is completely vegan. You won’t have to compromise on taste when making this plant based whole wheat bread.

Why Should I Make My Own Bread

There are some really compelling reasons you may want to consider making your own bread at home:

  1. There is nothing quite like coming home to the smell of freshly baked bread! When you have a bread maker you can set it to start at the time you want. This means that you can set it to have a freash loaf waiting for you when you get back from a long day.
  2. It’s healthier that store bought bread. I guess it could be argued that store bought bread has really come leaps and bounds above the typical loaf of wonder bread, but if you really want the quality store bought bread, you’ll be paying for it! That leads me to….
  3. It’s WAY cheaper to make your own bread. I’m talking like over 500% cheaper. Especially if you usually buy specialty breads.
  4. You can customize your bread. I’m constantly amazed by the different flavor combinations and textures you can create at home!

This is a staple recipe in our home. This bread is perfect for everyday use. Pair it with a hearty soup or stew, or make some toast for breakfast!

This recipe will make a 2 pound loaf, but I’ve included modifications if your breadmaker has a different capacity.

I find the 2 pound loaf makes the same equivalent as two store bought loaves of bread.

This is a perfect recipe for you and your family to enjoy fresh homemade bread right at home!

Homemade bread is a much healthier alternative to traditional store bought bread-especially if your’re vegan! Some store bought varieties of bread will contain animal ingredients.

I find that the “cheaper” loaves of store bought bread often do not contain animal products, but unfortunately they still have other chemicals and preservatives that I would rather not feed my family.

What ingredients do I need to make vegan whole wheat bread?

For this recipe you will need:

  1. Whole Wheat flour. If you have bread flour that is better. If you go with an all purpose whole wheat flour that’s ok too-you’re loaf may not rise as much. It’s still going to taste delicious and have a light texture.
  2. Plant milk. I like using Silk Soy Original milk. Any plant milk will work. I would avoid using any flavored milk such as vanilla.
  3. Brown Sugar.
  4. Salt.
  5. Water.
  6. Oil. I use canola oil, but any neutral tasting oil will work-do NOT use olive oil. This is way too flavored for this loaf.
  7. Bread Machine yeast. You cannot use traditional yeast in a bread maker. It will not break down properly and your loaf will not rise.

How long does home made bread last?

Well, in our house this bread doesn’t last long-because the kids eat it all! If you don’t eat a lot of bread, these two loaves should last about 4 days. Fresh is always best, but You won’t notice a change in texture or taste until day 5.

Can I freeze this bread recipe?

Yes! Actually I usually try and make a few loaves of bread on a meal prep day. I cool them completely, then slice them.

Freeze your bread in a large ziploc freezer bag!

This is a great vegan bread recipe but far too large for my bread maker, could you please share measurements for 1 pound loaf? even though you mention in the description, I couldn’t find these measurements and I would love to have them. Hope this message reaches you. Regards, Hana

Hi Hana, I’m sorry but I haven’t tried this recipe as a 1 pound loaf yet. Can I suggest using the dough cycle on your machine instead of baking the bread directly inside of it. Then baking the bread at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. This would make enough for 2 loaves. Good luck:)
